Fogg & Powers LLC

Jay is an associate attorney at Fogg & Powers and a registered patent attorney practicing in the areas of electrical and electronic technologies.

Jay’s practice includes patent preparation, patent prosecution, and opinions of infringement/invalidity. For example, Jay has drafted and prosecuted applications pertaining to technologies such as aircraft data networks, semiconductor manufacturing, and ring laser gyroscopes. Jay has been active in the patent community through various volunteer activities. In particular, Jay is the creator of a tool called ‘The Patent Pal’ used by thousands of patent practitioners and examiners worldwide. He is also the author of the Twitter feed ‘Rule of the Day’ which provides concise daily summaries of the patent rules and laws to help individuals increase their knowledge. In addition, he has volunteered to teach community education classes regarding the patent process to individuals interested in seeking a patent. Jay also created an internal knowledgebase at Fogg & Powers LLC to help facilitate the sharing of knowledge and experience.

Jay received his law degree from the J. Reuben Clark Law School at Brigham Young University. While in law school, Jay was a law clerk with Fogg & Powers where he prepared and prosecuted patent applications regarding electrical and electronic technologies. Jay was also a Senior Editor for the International Law and Management Review and was published by the review.

Jay earned his bachelor's degree in Physics from Brigham Young University while obtaining a minor in Mathematics and Spanish. While obtaining his undergraduate degree, he worked at IBM Educational Services providing support for a line of educational software used in K12 schools. He is admitted to practice law in Minnesota.
