Nicholas C. Ulen

Nicholas Ulen is a licensed attorney at Fogg & Powers LLC. He joined Fogg & Powers as an Associate Attorney after working as a Summer Associate.  Prior to joining the firm, Nick worked as a laboratory technician for a quality assurance lab. He earned a Bachelor of Arts degree from Gustavus Adolphus College, where he triple-majored in Physics, Biochemistry & Molecular Biology, and Chemistry. Following his laboratory experience he graduated law school at the Illinois Institute of Technology, where he earned his Juris Doctor summa cum laude and a J.D. Certificate in Intellectual Property.
During law school Nick served as an Executive Articles Editor of the Chicago-Kent Law Review and an Associate Editor for the Chicago-Kent Journal of Intellectual Property. He also was a competing member of the Moot Court Honor Society, where he represented Chicago-Kent in the 2018 Giles Sutherland Rich Moot Court Competition in Chicago, Illinois, and the 2019 McGee National Civil Rights Moot Court Competition in St. Paul, Minnesota. He was also inducted into the Chicago-Kent Chapter of the Order of the Coif, a national legal honorary society. Nick has published articles in the Chicago-Kent Law Review for his article on DNA patentability and the Wake Forest Journal of Law & Policy for his research on the First Amendment.
Nick explored many facets of the law while in law school. After his first year, he externed for the Honorable Brigid McGrath of the Circuit Court of Cook County, Law Division. During his second and third years, he was a research assistant for Professor Lori B. Andrews, Director of the Institute for Science, Law and Technology, and University Distinguished Professor David Gerber. He also externed at his school’s Intellectual Property Clinic, where he assisted in drafting patentability opinions and intellectual property counseling for inventors.
Nick is a licensed attorney in Minnesota and is registered to practice before the United States Patent and Trademark Office.
Outside of work, Nick enjoys performing classical music. In college he was concertmaster of the Gustavus Philharmonic Orchestra and a 1st Violinist for the Gustavus Symphony Orchestra. In law school, Nick played as a 1st Violinist for the Chicago Bar Association Symphony Orchestra.
