Riley S. Balling

Riley is a registered patent attorney and Of Counsel with Fogg & Powers LLC.  Riley has experience in preparing patent applications, prosecuting patent applications, prior art searches, portfolio analyses, and patent appeals. Prior to rejoining the firm, Riley worked at a firm located in Salt Lake City, Utah. Riley previously worked at Fogg and Powers for seven years before working at the Utah firm.  Riley has drafted and prosecuted applications related to a wide range of technologies that include data storage devices, optical devices, vision sensing, real-time operating systems, network management, communication systems, aircraft safety, home automation, integrated circuitry, MEMS, gyroscopes, software, data security among others.
Before entering the legal profession, Mr. Balling was a software engineer for a defense contractor where he worked in configuration management and software design. There, he developed and provided support for communication systems used in unmanned aerial vehicles and other devices to provide situational awareness in military applications.
Riley earned his Bachelor's degree in electrical engineering from Brigham Young University.  He received a Masters of Engineering degree in electrical engineering from the University of Utah.  He received his law degree from the J. Reuben Clark Law School where he participated in the Giles S. Rich Moot Court team and was an associate editor for the Journal of Public Law.
Riley is a licensed attorney in Minnesota and Utah and is registered to practice before the United States Patent and Trademark Office.
