About Riley

Riley is a registered patent attorney practicing in a wide array of software and hardware technologies, including telecommunications, navigation, aircraft, machine learning, optical systems, among many others. Riley's practice focuses on patent preparation and prosecution.


Riley began his career in 2004, working as a software engineer for a defense contractor, performing configuration management and software design in manufacturing communication systems. There, he provided support for the communication systems used in the Global Hawk drone. In 2008, Riley began his legal career, working as a summer clerk for several patent firms in Utah, performing patent preparation, prosecution, and portfolio analysis. During law school, he took part in the Giles S. Rich Moot Court team and was an associate editor for the Journal of Public Law.


In September 2010, Riley joined Fogg & Powers LLC, where he has worked in preparing and prosecuting patent applications, performing prior art searches, and drafting patent appeals. He briefly worked in 2018 at a firm in Salt Lake City and rejoined Fogg and Powers in February 2019. Riley enjoys engaging with inventors to provide the best possible service to clients in crafting patent strategies to help clients achieve their goals.


Outside of work, Riley enjoys furthering his knowledge of technology, philosophy, music, and the craft of writing. He is active in his community in efforts to balance competing rights and improve mental health. Also, he enjoys spending time with his family.
